The claim that short boundaries created the modern total needs unpacking
Ground dimensions are the most visible explanation for large scores, yet the distance to the rope is only one term in an equation containing several that moved together.

The appeal of a measurable villain
Boundary distance is one of the few variables in cricket that can be stated as a simple number and pointed at from the stands. That visibility makes it an attractive explanation for rising totals, because it requires no argument about technique or intent. The attraction is a reason to be careful rather than a reason to accept it, since visibility and explanatory power are unrelated.
Several less visible factors changed across the same period and each of them plausibly affects how far a struck ball travels or how often it is struck cleanly. An explanation that wins on availability rather than on evidence is exactly the kind this sort of scrutiny exists to slow down.
What the rope actually determines
The distance to the rope sets the threshold a ball must clear to be worth the maximum, which changes the payoff of an aerial shot. It does not change how well the ball was struck, and a change in threshold only matters for shots that land near it. Balls struck well beyond the boundary would clear a longer rope too, and balls struck poorly would fall short of a shorter one.
The effect therefore concentrates in a band of outcomes rather than applying uniformly to every shot played. Estimating its size requires knowing how many strikes fall in that band, which nobody quotes when making the claim.
Variables that move in the same direction
Outfield preparation has become faster and more uniform, which increases the value of shots along the ground and shortens the effective distance for a rolling ball. Bat profiles changed in ways that reduce the penalty for mistiming, so more mishits carry than would previously have been caught. Batting intent shifted as formats rewarded attacking rates, and training followed the incentive towards power and range hitting.
Any one of these could produce higher totals without a single boundary rope moving. Since all of them changed together, attributing the outcome to dimensions is a choice rather than a finding.
Why grounds differ for reasons of their own
Grounds vary in altitude, humidity and the hardness of the square, all of which affect ball carry and the speed of the outfield. A venue with a short square boundary may also sit at an elevation where the ball travels further through thinner air. Comparing venues by rope distance alone therefore compares bundles of properties under the label of the one that was measured.
Correcting for the others is possible but requires data that is not usually collected or published alongside dimensions. Without the correction, venue comparisons say less than their precision suggests.
A more careful claim
The defensible statement is that shorter boundaries increase the reward for aerial hitting at the margin and therefore shift optimal batting risk upward. That is a claim about incentives, it follows from the payoff structure, and it does not require asserting a magnitude nobody has measured. It also predicts something checkable, namely that shot selection should differ between grounds in ways visible on video.
The broader claim, that dimensions produced the modern total, packs several unmeasured effects into one convenient number. Unpacking it does not defend the grounds; it simply refuses to award them credit that belongs elsewhere. Where the credit does belong is a genuinely open question, and the several candidates have never been separated from one another.
