The claim in its usual form

The familiar argument holds that spreading minutes across a squad reduces accumulated load and therefore lowers the rate at which players break down. The mechanism is plausible, since tissue damage accumulates with repeated high-intensity exposure and recovery requires time that a congested schedule removes. Plausibility is not the issue; the issue is that the effect size and even the direction are extremely difficult to establish from match data.

Establishing them would require comparing similar players under different rotation policies with everything else held constant. Nothing about competitive football holds anything constant, and no club would sacrifice results to run the comparison.

Who gets rested is not random

Selection for rest is made by staff who already believe a player is carrying fatigue or is at elevated risk for reasons they can observe. That means the rested group and the unrested group differ systematically before any rest is administered. If rested players subsequently suffer fewer injuries, part of the gap may reflect the staff judgement rather than the rest itself.

If they suffer more, that may reflect the fact that they were selected precisely because something already looked wrong. A comparison in which assignment depends on the outcome being studied cannot separate the treatment from the reason for it.

Rare events and unstable rates

Serious injuries are infrequent for any individual player across a season, so the counts available for comparison are small. Small counts produce rates that swing widely between seasons without any change in the underlying process that generates them. A club whose injury total falls after adopting a rotation policy has weak grounds for attributing the fall to the policy.

The same club would have had a substantial chance of a lower total anyway, particularly if the previous season was unusually bad. This is the same regression pattern that flatters almost every intervention introduced after a poor run.

The load that is not counted

Match minutes are recorded precisely, while training load, travel, sleep disruption and international duty are recorded unevenly or not at all. If the uncounted components move in the opposite direction to the counted ones, a rotation policy can reduce minutes without reducing total load. A player rested from a fixture may train harder that week, which converts the intended reduction into a redistribution.

Without complete accounting, any relationship found between appearances and injuries is measuring a fraction of the exposure. The fraction is the part that is easy to measure, not the part most likely to matter. Measuring what is convenient and then reasoning as though it were complete is how a plausible mechanism becomes an unsupported policy claim.

What can honestly be said

It is defensible to say that recovery time between high-intensity efforts is physiologically necessary and that congested calendars compress it. It is not defensible to say that a specific rotation policy at a specific club produced a specific reduction in breakdowns. The gap between those statements is where most confident commentary on the subject sits, usually without acknowledging that it is there.

Readers seeking guidance on their own training load need a qualified professional rather than an inference drawn from elite fixture lists. The unresolved status of the question is a fact about the evidence, not a failure of the people studying it. Practitioners working inside clubs are generally clearer about that uncertainty than the confident summaries produced outside them.
