Dew as an explanation does more work than the mechanism justifies
Evening moisture genuinely changes how a ball behaves, but the explanation is applied to outcomes far beyond what a damp ball could plausibly produce.

A narrow mechanism
Moisture on the outfield and on the ball reduces the friction available to a bowler gripping it and makes the surface faster underfoot. A wet ball is harder to grip for spinners and harder to hold seam-up for quicker bowlers, so control degrades in describable ways. That is the whole of the mechanism, and it is a real one that anyone who has bowled in the evening will recognise.
What it predicts is a specific loss of control and a specific reduction in the deviation available, not a general collapse of a bowling attack. The distance between that narrow prediction and the uses the explanation is put to is where the trouble begins.
How the explanation expands
Dew is routinely offered to account for failures of field placement, poor length selection, batting collapses and results decided long before any moisture appeared. None of those follow from a slippery ball, and several occurred in the earlier innings when conditions were dry. An explanation applied to outcomes it does not predict has stopped functioning as an explanation and started functioning as a excuse.
The expansion is easy because nobody in the discussion is measuring the moisture or checking whether it was present at the relevant time. Unmeasured conditions can be invoked freely, which is precisely why they attract so much causal traffic.
The toss argument and what it bundles
The claim that chasing is advantageous in the evening bundles dew together with reduced heat, changed light and the psychological simplicity of a target. Each of those is a separate mechanism, and separating them would require comparing matches where one varied while the others did not. Since they arrive together, any advantage detected in results cannot be assigned to dew rather than to the bundle.
The bundle may well confer an advantage; the confidence with which one component is named as the cause is what does not follow. This distinction matters when administrators are asked to change scheduling on the strength of the claim.
Countermeasures and what they reveal
Grounds respond with drying agents, covered practice and ball changes, which shows that practitioners take the mechanism seriously and treat it as manageable. A manageable condition is a weaker explanation for large outcome swings than an unmanageable one, since the management partly removes it. The presence of countermeasures also means the amount of moisture actually reaching play varies between venues and evenings.
That variation is invisible from outside, so a viewer invoking dew cannot know whether it was substantially present at all. Explanations that cannot be checked by the person offering them should be held loosely rather than asserted.
What honest use looks like
It is reasonable to note that a spinner is struggling to grip the ball and that this is consistent with moisture in the air. It is not reasonable to attribute a result to dew when the decisive passage occurred earlier and involved no observable loss of control. The narrow use is checkable against what the bowlers are visibly doing with their hands and their towels.
The broad use requires nothing from the observer and explains everything, which is the standard signature of a claim that has stopped being about the world. Keeping the narrow version and dropping the broad one costs nothing in accuracy.
