The chain a recovery claim has to complete

A recovery claim asserts that an intervention accelerates the restoration of some physiological capacity and that the acceleration improves subsequent performance. The first part can sometimes be measured through markers of tissue damage, inflammation or restored force production under controlled conditions. The second part requires showing that a difference in those markers translates into a difference in what an athlete can do days later.

Markers are chosen because they can be sampled conveniently, not because anyone has shown them to govern the capacity that matters. That translation is where most of the chain breaks, because performance is influenced by far more than the marker being tracked. A claim that stops at the marker has demonstrated something considerably narrower than what is being sold.

Perceived and objective recovery diverge

Many interventions reliably make athletes feel better, and improved perceived readiness is a genuine outcome that affects willingness to train. It is not the same as restored capacity, and the two can move independently, particularly where the sensation is strong and immediate. An athlete who feels recovered may train harder than their tissues are ready for, which converts a comfort benefit into a risk.

Studies measuring perception and studies measuring force production can therefore reach different conclusions about the same intervention. Reporting only the favourable measure is a common pattern and does not require anyone to fabricate anything.

Why blinding fails here

Interventions involving temperature, pressure or vibration produce sensations the participant cannot be unaware of, so concealment is impractical. Sham conditions exist and are usually imperfect, because a convincing sham that produces no physiological effect is hard to construct. Without adequate blinding, expectation contributes to both the perception and the effort applied in subsequent sessions.

This is a structural limitation of the field rather than a failing of any particular piece of work. It means the evidence base is systematically weaker than the confidence of the surrounding commerce implies.

Timing and the possibility of interference

Some recovery mechanisms act by dampening the inflammatory response, which is also part of the signalling that drives adaptation to training. If that is correct, an intervention could accelerate short-term restoration while reducing the long-term benefit of the session it followed. Whether that trade-off is material at practical doses is genuinely unresolved and is the subject of ongoing disagreement among researchers.

The possibility alone is enough to make blanket recommendations inappropriate, since the correct answer may depend on the phase of a training year. An athlete deciding what to use around their own training needs qualified guidance rather than a general mechanism.

What can honestly be said

It is defensible to say that several interventions produce measurable short-term changes in perception and in some physiological markers. It is not defensible to say that any of them reliably improves competitive performance, because that connection has not been established. The gap is filled by testimonial and by the visibility of elite athletes using the equipment, neither of which is evidence about effect.

Elite adoption reflects availability, sponsorship and the reasonable preference for doing something over doing nothing. None of that is dishonest, and none of it answers the question the buyer is actually asking. The question is whether the intervention would change their own outcomes, and that has not been answered for the general population either.
