The mechanisms that are real

Removing wind eliminates a source of unpredictability in ball flight and in the toss, which benefits players whose margins are fine. Enclosing a space raises humidity, and a more humid, denser air slows a ball slightly while affecting how much a surface holds moisture. Artificial light replaces changing natural light, which removes the difficulty of playing into a low sun and alters depth perception subtly.

Each of those is a describable physical effect and none of them is in serious dispute among people who have played under both conditions. The dispute concerns what happens when they are combined, because they do not all push in the same direction.

Why the sample is not random

A roof closes for reasons, principally rain and fading light, so the matches played under it are matches that met those conditions. Those conditions correlate with time of day, with weather patterns and therefore with the stage of the tournament and the players involved. Comparing indoor and outdoor matches therefore compares two sets selected by a process related to the thing being studied.

A difference found between them cannot be attributed to the roof without first accounting for how the sets were assembled. This is the standard difficulty with observational comparison, and it is unusually severe here because the selection rule is explicit.

Mid-match closure and the disruption confound

The most discussed cases involve a roof closing during play, which adds an interruption of substantial length to the change in conditions. An interruption alone changes rhythm, allows both players to receive instruction and permits physical recovery that neither would otherwise have had. Any shift in the pattern of play afterwards therefore has at least two candidate causes arriving simultaneously.

Separating them would require closures without breaks or breaks without closures, and neither occurs in the situations people discuss. Attributing a turnaround to the conditions rather than the pause is a preference rather than a finding.

Player accounts and their limits

Players describe indoor conditions consistently, usually as heavier and more predictable, and those accounts are worth taking seriously as data. They are not, however, blind, since a player knows perfectly well whether the roof is closed and holds expectations about what that means. Expectation shapes perception in exactly the situations where the physical difference is small, which is likely to be most of them.

The accounts therefore establish that something is perceived and do not establish how much of it originates in the air. Instrumented measurement of ball flight under both states would settle far more than another round of interviews.

A narrower claim that survives

The claim that removing wind reduces variability in ball flight follows directly from the physics and needs no further support. The claim that a closed roof favours a particular style of player requires an effect size that nobody has estimated. The first is useful, checkable and modest, while the second is repeated far more often because it can be used to explain results.

Explaining results is the demand that keeps pulling modest mechanisms into claims they cannot carry. Resisting that pull is most of what scrutiny consists of in a subject where the physical effects are genuine but small. The small effect stays small no matter how large the result it is being asked to account for.
