String tension advice is confident in a way the evidence cannot support
Stringing recommendations are exchanged as settled knowledge, yet the interaction between tension, string material and an individual swing resists the clean generalisations offered.

The shape of the standard advice
The common formulation holds that lower tension produces more power while higher tension produces more control, stated as though it were a fixed law. There is a physical basis, since a looser string bed deforms more on impact and returns more of the stored energy to the ball. The complication is that the same deformation changes dwell time and launch angle, which affect where the ball goes as much as how fast it travels.
Whether the net result feels like power or like a loss of accuracy depends on the stroke being played and the spin being applied. A rule that reverses depending on the player is not the kind of rule the advice presents itself as being.
Too many variables changing together
Tension does not act alone; it interacts with string gauge, material stiffness, pattern density and the frame stiffness the bed is mounted in. Changing tension while holding those constant is possible in a laboratory and almost never what happens when a player experiments. Players typically change several things at once because they are chasing a feel rather than isolating a variable.
The resulting conclusions are attributed to tension because tension is the number that was written down. Attribution to the recorded variable rather than the responsible one is one of the most common errors in equipment lore.
Why player feedback is unreliable evidence
A player who has just had a racket restrung knows what was changed and in which direction, which is exactly the condition that produces expectation effects. Expectation is powerful in tasks involving fine perception, and the perception of a string bed is about as fine as sporting judgement gets. Blinding the player to the change would be straightforward to arrange and is essentially never done outside formal testing.
Without blinding, the feedback records what the player anticipated as much as what the equipment did. This does not mean the perceptions are worthless, but it does mean they cannot settle a disagreement about mechanism.
What machine testing can and cannot resolve
Ball machines and impact rigs can measure rebound speed and spin generation across tensions with excellent repeatability and no expectation bias. What they cannot reproduce is the adjustment a human makes to a changed response, which is where most of the practical effect lives. A player who feels less control will swing more cautiously, and the cautious swing produces the outcome the tension was blamed for.
The equipment change and the behavioural response are therefore inseparable in play and separable only in a rig that excludes the response. Each method removes precisely the thing the other measures, which is why the question stays open.
Where this leaves the advice
The honest position is that tension changes the string bed response in directions that are understood and produces outcomes that depend on the player. Prescriptive numbers offered without reference to the individual stroke are asserting a generality the underlying physics does not deliver. A player experimenting deliberately, changing one variable at a time and keeping notes, is doing something more rigorous than most published guidance.
That is an unglamorous conclusion for a topic that generates a great deal of confident conversation. The confidence is a feature of the conversation rather than of the knowledge behind it. Anyone repeating a tension recommendation as a rule is passing on a preference that was formed under conditions nobody controlled.
