Why form in cricket is almost impossible to separate from conditions
Selection talk treats form as a property of the player, but the recent scores it rests on are produced jointly by the player, the opposition and the surface.

What the word is doing
Form is used to mean a temporary elevation or depression in a player underlying ability, inferred entirely from the scores of the last handful of innings. The inference requires assuming that those scores were produced mainly by the player rather than by the bowling and the surfaces encountered. That assumption is doing enormous work, because a short sequence of innings is far too small to average away differences in what was faced.
A batter who has met three good attacks on helpful surfaces will look out of form even if nothing about them has changed. The label attaches to the person, which is precisely the part of the situation least likely to have moved in the time available.
The confound in its simplest form
Two things vary at once across a short run of innings: the batter internal state and the external difficulty of the innings. Only the outcome is observed, so any attempt to read the internal state from the outcome must hold the external difficulty constant. Nobody holds it constant, because fixtures are not designed as experiments and the schedule supplies whatever opposition it supplies.
That is the textbook shape of a confounded comparison, and no amount of watching closely dissolves it. It is why two observers can watch the same sequence and disagree completely about whether anything has changed.
Things that plausibly do change within a player
It would be too strong to say that nothing varies inside a batter, because technique drifts, injuries accumulate and decision-making can genuinely deteriorate under pressure. A trigger movement that has slipped, a head position that has fallen away or a bat path that has become steeper are observable and correctable. Those are mechanical claims about a body doing a repeatable action, and they can be checked against footage rather than against scores.
When a coach describes form in those terms, the claim is specific and testable in a way the general version never is. The vaguer usage borrows credibility from the specific one while avoiding any commitment that could turn out to be false.
Why the label is costly
Selection decisions made on the basis of form treat a noisy short sequence as a signal, which guarantees a high rate of both types of error. A player dropped for a run of low scores against strong bowling may be the better long-term option, and the decision is unrecoverable once made. Equally, a player retained on the strength of runs made in benign conditions can be protected from scrutiny they have not earned.
The errors are asymmetric in visibility, because a dropped player failure elsewhere is never observed and the retained player failure eventually is. This asymmetry quietly rewards the habit of reading form from scores even when the reading is unreliable.
A more defensible way to talk about it
The stronger approach separates two questions: has the difficulty of recent innings been unusual, and has anything mechanical or physical changed in the player. Both questions have partial answers available from footage and from the schedule, and neither is answered by the raw sequence of scores. Keeping them apart means a run of failures can be described accurately as bad conditions, as a technical slip, or as genuinely unexplained.
The last option is unpopular because it offers nothing to act on, and it is frequently the honest one. A discipline that cannot say it does not know will always fill the gap with a story about form.

- A run of failures may describe the bowling rather than the batter
