The idea that spinners need a big turning surface is less settled than it sounds
Turn is treated as the resource a spin bowler depends on, yet much of what troubles batters comes from flight, dip and pace variation that a flat surface does not remove.

A belief that shapes selection and blame
The assumption that spinners are only dangerous on responsive surfaces influences who is picked, how long they bowl and what is said when they fail. It is not baseless, since a surface that grips and breaks up plainly increases the deviation available off the pitch. But it quietly reduces spin bowling to a single variable, and that reduction is where the claim starts to overreach.
A spinner acts on the batter before the ball lands, through trajectory, revolutions and the speed at which the ball arrives. Any account that ignores those stages will systematically overrate the contribution of the surface.
What happens in the air
Heavy revolutions applied to a cricket ball create aerodynamic forces that cause the ball to dip late and to drift laterally during flight. Dip changes where the ball lands relative to where the batter judged it would land, which shortens or lengthens the delivery after the decision has been made. Drift moves the line in the air, so a batter playing to the perceived line finds the ball arriving on a different one.
Neither effect requires anything from the surface, which is why a genuinely quick spinner of the ball can trouble batters on a placid pitch. The visual absence of turn makes those deliveries look harmless, and the batter difficulty is then attributed to something else.
Pace variation and the perception problem
A change of a few miles per hour alters the time available to a batter and the point at which the ball must be met. Because the change is small and the action looks identical, the batter has almost no cue beyond the trajectory itself. Deliveries defeated by pace variation frequently look like deliveries defeated by turn, since both end with the bat arriving in the wrong place.
Attributing the dismissal to the surface is therefore easy and often wrong, and there is rarely any check on the attribution. This is another instance of reading a cause backwards from an outcome that several causes could produce.
Where the flat-pitch complaint is legitimate
None of this means the surface is irrelevant, because grip determines how much of the applied revolution converts into lateral movement after pitching. A bowler whose method depends on beating the outside edge with deviation genuinely loses their main weapon when that conversion drops. The legitimate complaint is specific: this particular method requires this particular surface property, and it was absent.
The illegitimate version is general, treating any unsuccessful spell on a good batting surface as explained by the pitch alone. Distinguishing them requires asking what the bowler was actually trying to do rather than what spinners are supposed to need.
The claim worth testing
A sharper hypothesis would be that surface grip matters far more for some spin methods than others, and that the difference is large. It predicts that bowlers relying on trajectory and revolutions should show smaller falls in effectiveness on unhelpful surfaces than those relying on deviation. That is a statement that could be wrong, which already makes it more useful than the blanket belief it would replace.
It also changes selection logic, because a side choosing a spinner for hostile conditions would be choosing on method rather than on reputation. The blanket version survives largely because it excuses everyone involved whenever a spell goes badly.
