The claim as it is usually stated

The familiar version holds that bats have become heavier, that heavier bats hit the ball further, and that this explains the change in boundary frequency. The middle step is where the argument is weakest, because the distance a ball travels depends on the speed of the bat at contact as well as its mass. A heavier implement is harder to accelerate, so any gain from mass is offset to some degree by a loss in swing speed.

Whether the net effect is positive depends on the batter strength and technique, which is precisely the variable the equipment story sets aside. The claim can be true for some players and false for others, and stating it as a general fact hides that dependence.

What edge profile actually changes

Modern bats are noticeably deeper through the edges and the spine, which redistributes mass towards the parts of the blade that meet mistimed shots. A ball struck away from the middle loses far less energy on a thick-edged blade than on a slender one, so the mishit clears the rope. That is a real and substantial change, and it is a different claim from the one about total weight.

It predicts that the increase in boundaries should show up disproportionately in shots that were not properly middled, which is a checkable pattern. Collapsing this into a general statement about heavier bats loses the mechanism that is doing most of the work.

The confounds nobody controls for

Bat design changed during a period in which limited-overs formats expanded, fielding restrictions altered and batters began training explicitly for power. Any of those could raise boundary counts on its own, and all of them moved in the same direction at the same time. Separating the equipment effect from the intent effect would require holding one constant while the other varied, which never happened.

Boundary sizes and outfield speeds also changed, adding two further variables that sit directly in the causal path. With that many moving parts, attributing the change to bats is a choice among explanations rather than a conclusion drawn from evidence.

Why the equipment story is so appealing

Equipment is visible, tangible and easy to point at, which makes it a satisfying culprit compared with a diffuse change in training and intent. It also carries a moral charge, since blaming the tool implies the achievement is somehow less earned than it appears. That charge is why the claim recurs whenever a scoring record moves, and it is entirely independent of whether the physics supports it.

A bat that looks enormous does most of the persuasive work before any argument is made. Appeal is not evidence, and a claim that would be believed regardless of its truth needs more scrutiny than one that would not.

What would actually settle it

Settling the question needs controlled striking tests holding swing speed constant across blades of differing mass and profile, measuring exit velocity rather than outcomes. Such testing is entirely feasible with existing equipment and is not what the public argument rests on. Until it informs the discussion, the defensible position is that edge profile plausibly matters, total mass is ambiguous, and intent changed alongside both.

That is an unsatisfying answer to a question people expect to have a single villain. It is also the only answer the available reasoning supports.
