What the word is asserting

To call a serve unreadable is to claim that the motion contains no information about direction or spin until the ball has left the strings. That is a strong claim about a movement lasting the better part of a second and involving the whole body in a coordinated sequence. A toss placement, a shoulder alignment, a hip rotation and a racket path all occur before contact and all constrain what can follow.

Removing every cue would require decoupling the outcome from the mechanics, which is not possible for a stroke that depends on them. What is possible is compressing the cues into a window too short for a returner to use, which is a different and much more defensible claim. The difference between those two statements is the difference between an impossibility and an engineering problem with a measurable solution.

How returners actually gather information

A returner is not identifying the serve so much as continuously updating a set of expectations as the motion unfolds. Early cues narrow the range of plausible outcomes, later cues narrow it further, and the final movement decides between the survivors. That process is probabilistic throughout, so a returner is rarely certain and rarely without any information at all.

The subjective experience of being unable to read a server is the experience of the range staying wide until very late. Wide-until-late is a description of timing rather than of the absence of information.

Pattern memory and its confounds

Returners also carry expectations built from previous points, including which serve tends to arrive at which score. A server who varies unpredictably defeats that layer without changing anything about their mechanics, which looks identical from the outside. This means apparent disguise can come from sequencing rather than from technique, and the two are extremely hard to separate in play.

A server praised for a repeatable motion may simply be well disciplined about choosing unpredictably. Since both produce the same difficulty, attributing it to one or the other is guesswork unless the motion has been examined frame by frame.

Why the absolute version persists

Absolute language is more vivid, and a returner beaten repeatedly has an experience that feels absolute regardless of the underlying mechanics. Commentary adopts the player experience because it is the most available account and because the alternative is a discussion of probabilities. The absolute framing then becomes a fixed attribute of the player rather than a description of a particular contest.

Attributes assigned that way are rarely revisited, even when a different returner handles the same serve comfortably. A property that varies by opponent is not a property of the server alone.

The version worth defending

The defensible claim is that a motion which delays its distinguishing cues until close to contact leaves a returner insufficient time to prepare. That claim is checkable against footage, since the point at which the paths of different serves diverge can be located. It also explains why disguise degrades against returners who stand further back, gaining time at the cost of angle coverage.

Framed this way, disguise becomes a measurable quantity in a trade rather than a mystical quality some players possess. The mystical framing costs nothing to say and explains nothing once said. Replacing it with a claim about when the cues diverge turns an unarguable compliment into something a coach could actually work on.
