Load management claims rest on an injury model nobody actually has
Withholding players from fixtures is justified by an expected reduction in breakdowns, which requires a quantified relationship between exposure and risk that does not exist.

What the justification assumes
The stated reasoning is that accumulated exposure raises the probability of injury and that removing exposure lowers it by a meaningful amount. That requires a function relating minutes played to risk, including the shape of the relationship and where any thresholds lie. No such function has been established with the precision the decisions imply, and the underlying processes differ between injury types.
A soft tissue strain and a traumatic joint injury have different relationships to fatigue, and aggregating them obscures both. The policy is therefore acting on a relationship whose direction is plausible and whose magnitude is unknown.
Selection makes the record uninformative
Players are rested because staff already believe they are at elevated risk, using information nobody outside the organisation can see. Comparing rested and unrested players therefore compares groups that differ on the variable being studied before any rest occurs. A lower injury rate among rested players could reflect the rest or could reflect that the staff assessment was accurate and the risk passed.
A higher rate could reflect that the assessment identified players who were already deteriorating. No amount of additional observation resolves a comparison in which assignment depends on hidden information about the outcome.
Rare events and the tempting story
Serious injuries are infrequent per player per season, so any single organisation accumulates very few events to learn from. Small numbers swing widely, and a season with fewer injuries after a policy change is weak evidence that the policy caused the reduction. The reverse also holds, and a bad season under a careful policy does not show that the policy was wrong.
Both patterns occur, and each is used by whichever party finds it convenient at the time. The underlying difficulty is that the sport does not generate enough events for a single team to answer the question. Pooling across teams would help and requires a shared record that nobody has an obvious incentive to assemble or publish.
The unmeasured components of load
Game minutes are recorded exactly while practice intensity, travel, sleep and the density of the schedule are captured unevenly. If a rested player trains harder or travels the same distance, the intended reduction in total load may not occur at all. Any analysis using minutes as the exposure variable is therefore measuring a fraction of what the theory says matters.
That fraction is chosen for availability rather than for relevance, which is a common compromise and an important one to state. Conclusions drawn from it inherit the limitation whether or not anyone mentions it.
A defence that does not need the evidence
The policy can be defended on precautionary grounds, since the mechanism is plausible and the cost of resting a player in a long season is modest. That argument is honest about acting under uncertainty and does not claim a quantified benefit that nobody can supply. It also survives the objection that the evidence is weak, because it never depended on the evidence being strong.
Claims that a specific programme prevented a specific number of injuries are the part that cannot be supported. Dropping those claims would leave the practice on firmer ground than the confident version currently stands on. Overclaiming invites a rebuttal that the practice does not need and cannot survive, while the precautionary case is difficult to attack at all.
