Defining the window changes the answer

Late-game situations must be delimited by a time remaining and a score margin, and both thresholds are chosen rather than discovered. Different reasonable thresholds produce different sets of possessions and therefore different rankings of who performed within them. A finding that depends on where an arbitrary line was drawn is not a finding about players.

Analysts are aware of this and it does not prevent the resulting lists from circulating as though they identified a trait. The sensitivity to definition is the first sign that the concept is less solid than its usage implies. A robust trait would show up across a wide range of reasonable thresholds rather than appearing and vanishing as the window is adjusted.

Sample size at its most extreme

The possessions meeting any late-game definition amount to a small fraction of a season for any individual player. Percentages computed from a few dozen attempts vary enormously, which means a player can lead or trail such a list by chance alone. Reputations built on those samples are extremely durable, since the sample never grows fast enough to correct them.

A player labelled clutch early will have subsequent successes remembered and failures discounted, which is how reputations maintain themselves. The mechanism producing the belief is therefore well understood even where the underlying ability is not.

The situation is not the same situation

Defences change substantially late in close games, doubling earlier, denying entry passes and fouling deliberately to manage the clock. A player attempting a shot in that context faces a harder task than the same shot earlier, so their percentage should fall. Comparing late percentages to overall percentages therefore compares different tasks and reads the difference as a psychological property.

Adjusting for difficulty narrows the apparent effect considerably, which is what would be expected if the effect were largely an artefact. Some residual difference may remain, and establishing it requires more possessions than the sport supplies.

Decision-making rather than execution

There is a more defensible version of the idea concerning decisions rather than shooting, since late situations impose specific constraints on time and fouls. Knowing when to attack, when to draw contact and how to use the clock are learnable skills that some players plainly execute better. Those skills can be assessed by examining decisions against the situation rather than by counting whether shots went in.

That assessment does not require a psychological claim and does not depend on the tiny outcome samples. It is also much closer to what coaching staffs actually work on when they prepare for those situations.

Why the category survives

Late moments are the most watched and most replayed parts of any game, so the evidence available to memory is drawn entirely from them. Vivid, heavily rewatched events produce strong impressions, and strong impressions are what the label is built from. Dismissing the concept entirely overreaches in the other direction, since decision quality under specific constraints is real and observable.

The honest position separates a measurable decision skill from an unmeasured shooting trait and declines to merge them. Merging them is what allows the word to be applied to any late outcome whatever produced it. A term that survives every result it is used to describe has become a way of narrating endings rather than a claim about players.
